The Wayuu tribes inhabit a 16,963-mile territory in common borders within Colombia and Venezuela. Throughout the year, temperatures in the dry and desert territory run between 95°-108°F. Thus their great need for water to sustain their lives. The Wayuu used to benefit from the Rancheria River, a natural resource that has disappeared little by little. Today, where water used to flow, there’s nothing but a sand path.
The Wayuu have their own water collecting system called a Jaguey -a man-made pond that collects rain water for washing, bathing, drinking, cooking, and even for sharing with their animals. The water stagnates, turns muddy and becomes contaminated, therefore the many health issues affecting children. From 2009 thru 2015 La Guajira region suffered a terrible drought causing their Jagueys to dry. Not having another source of water supply, the situation was critical, contributing to the many deaths reported in those years.
A Wayuu brother told us once, “Water is more precious than gold. You can live without gold, but you can’t stay alive without water”. Our Water For Life(TM) program was born to honor the truth of his words… we need water for life, and It has become an important signature of our Jesus In YUU Project. Your donation enables us to continue taking clean safe water to 12 Rancherias we serve, and to provide water filters to school children. Give Life… it takes water.
“…for I was thirsty and you gave me drink… Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’.”— Matthew 25:35-40
