In the present time, many Wayuu children receive a homeschool type of education that goes from what we know as K to 3rd grade. One or more adults in the community are in charge of giving the children a basic self-taught education program, enough to allow them to communicate in Spanish with the outside world, and manage money when they’re of age to go out and sell their crafts.
In the last 15 years, there has been more interest in the Wayuu children’s education and advancement influenced by missionary organizations, local non-profits, and Colombian gubernatorial agencies that focus on education and children welfare. Thru dialogue, and educational workshops organizations and local indigenous government representatives have been able to reason and come to agreements with key older Wayuu leaders who tended to oppose the idea of having a school structure in their Rancherias other than the quick homeschool that they’ve always embraced.
Colombia’s Ministry of Education has developed and made available an approved official education program specially formulated for indigenous tribes, allowing indigenous children to complete a more advanced education than the one they’ve received in the past.
